*->For the 2004 Perth Marathon I trained for 11 weeks, and raced, carrying a torn Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in one knee (Basketball injury October 2000), a small cartilage (meniscus) tear in the other knee (Had this one since May 2000, possibly related to a touch-rugby injury from 1991), big problems with shin splints in both calves(due partly to worn out shoes, need for orthotics?, also ankle injury December 2003; I kicked a kerb while running), plus the usual back injury issue, and usual fitness handicaps, so I was very proud of my effort to beat my target of 4 hours.....
Only coach (true legend) Ive ever had!
Anything I achieved in racewalking had a lot to do with my coach Stan, and the training culture we had in our group of racewalkers out on the back roads of Armadale..... When Graham W. became Australian Centurion 48 in 2004, he was following in Stan's footsteps... Stan was the 10th Australian Centurion,....And has been known to give the 2hr barrier a good shake for a 20km walk even in his 70's...Won gold in the Australian Masters right into his 80's...He did a 3.09 marathon in the 1948 London Olympics in his SAS days. Graham also did a 1hr 41 (racing for Victoria) in the National 20k walk in 1999, and competed in Nationals many times. Others who trained with our group AND represented WA included Aaron P., and Richard McP. Richard also set a very good state Open residential record for the 10km walk of about 45 minutes in the 80's , and I am pretty sure repped Australia at World Juniors...
Will Jonathon ever make a comeback as a Racewalker?!
There is a chance it MAY (or may not) happen somewhere between 2007 and 2014, or beyond...although every year that goes by sees me less and less confident that I could ever get back to that level.
While a comeback as a racewalker for me is something I'd like to do, and my endurance is well maintained with the Marathons I have run in 2004-2010, plus I'd love to improve on my current PB's and have another go at making an Australian team, I am not currently in a position to do so as I need knee operations, and have other priorities such as marraige,work,kid/s etc that are more important to me now. Also I am very happy with the racewalking achievements and experiences I was blessed with thanks to God!
That said, if I could get my knee injuries fixed which presumably still involves at least two instances of surgery (torn ACL from basketball October 2000 and meniscus/cartilage wear and tear from May 2000), and juggle my other commitments well enough to put inplace some well focused training regime..I could certainly return if it looked like I could threaten my racewalking PB's

Finally after 4 years of trying, a race PB! in the 2009 6 inch 46km! by 9 minutes... I was ecstatic!
Thanking God at the finish of my 10th Marathon the 2009 Melbourne Marathon in 4hrs 11min. Click on the photo to see links to my race report, video of my finish and more photos... After a first 5k in 23.21, and my first 21.1km in 1hr 47min (halfway there), I was feeling very comfortable, and a good chance of beating my 3hrs 55min PB but a 16minute toilet break, destroyed my chances, ate too much (at 1am, with a race start at 7am) too close to the race...)
About 34km into a 3.55.10 Perth Marathon in 2008, which was only 8 seconds shy of the 3.55.02 in my first of 7 consecutive Perth Marathons in 2004.
*[the winner from Poland was the legendary Robert Korzenowski of course, see my webpageabout THE racewalker of the decade. He went on to take the 2000 Sydney Olympic 50km walk (which I had the privelege of competing in the trials for, and watching the race at Stadium Australia, see this webpage) AND 20km walk, the first in history to do the double, set a world record of 3.hr 36min for the 50km walk in 2002, and become a TRIPLE winner of the 50km walk (Atlanta 96/Sydney 2000 Athens 2004)in 2004 before retiring.
Korzenowski waiting to pounce on Massana from Spain. AGAIN! the master, this time of the Sydney 2000 Olympic 50km walk. Nathan Deakes from Australia is also in this photo. Nathan Deakes was not far off the medals in this race, and went on to win the bronze medal in the 20km at the Athens Olympics in 2004. He was also fighting it out with the great Korzenowski in the Athens 2004 50km walk, until being DQ'd. Korzenowski won the 50km for the third Olympics in a row (Atlanta/Sydney/Athens). Nathan Deakes of Australia won the 20km Walk and 50km Walk double at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, which also saw Jane Saville win the Womans 20km Walk to complete an Australian dominance of the Racewalking at these Games.
Deakes, along with another Australian champion in Jane Saville(who put the heartbreak of being DQ-ed while leading the Sydney Olympics 20km behind her to win the Bronze in the 2004 Athens Olympics Womens 20km Walk and finish 2004 ranked No 1 in the world by the IAAF),
both successfully defended their Commonwealth Games titles in Melbourne in 2006....I really enjoyed watching it with my now wife Kathryn and took lots of photos at the 50km walk!....Caught up with two blokes Graham and Daniel who I had raced and/or trained with back in my racewalking days in WA...
Visiting Melbourne in March 2006 was well worth it, especially as it was free to watch the Walks & the Marathon out on the course) Enjoyed cheering on Aussie victories in the Walks at the Commonwealth Games! Kathryn and I had our blue Nathan Deakes shirts on and I saw lots of Chris Erickson shirts there too...awesome experience.... Aussie Aussie Aussie! .......
The view onto the MCG for track events....and....At the 50km walk outside the Docklands Testra Dome AFL stadium....
Have heaps more photos from the race may get around to putting some of them online one day....
2006; Sunday March 19; Marathon....Monday March 20; 20km walks....Friday March 24 50km walk... Be interesting to see how Australia goes in Beijing Olympics 2008, especially after Deakes doing a 20km in 1hr 17 in 2005, and in;
December 2006 breaking the world record in the 50km walk with a 3hr 35! in Geelong....
August 2007;Nathan Deakes also took the World Champion GOLD medal in the 2007 Osaka 50km walk in, entering the stadium in 3.43 in the hot, humid conditions...
Tallent steps up...
Unfortunately Deakes got injured training flat out for the Beijing Olympics in Europe but another Victorian in young Jarrad TALLENT stepped up to take the Silver medal in the Beijing Olympics 50km walk and the Bronze medal in the 20km walk also... I got to chat with Jarrad when I spotted him racewalking the 2007 Melbourne Marathon, ( I ran alongside him for a bit during my 4hr 10, he beat me by heaps even though he was racewalking) the year before he became world famous...Also got passed at about 11km by Jarrad Tallent in the 2009 Melbourne Marathon in which he racewalked a 3.08 Marathon. As of 2010 Jane Saville has retired, Nathan Deakes is yet to return to the world stage, although that may happen soon, and Jared Tallent continues to represent Australia and medal internationally, including a Gold in the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth games 20km walk (just beating Luke Adams (Chris Erickson also represented Australia in this one too)), with his wife Claire taking the Silver in the Womens 20km walk.
